European automotive nonwovens market forecast to reach $1 billion by 2035

Electrification, lightweighting and demand for quieter cabins are shifting automotive nonwovens from basic interior materials towards higher-value acoustic, thermal and circular solutions.

Europe’s automotive nonwovens market is forecast to grow from about $800 million in 2026 to $1 billion by 2035, according to Stratview Research. The consultancy expects a 3.1% compound annual growth rate, with cumulative sales exceeding $8 billion over 2026–35. Germany accounted for nearly one-quarter of regional demand in 2025.

Carpets remain the volume anchor

Automotive carpets are expected to remain the largest application, followed by uses including insulation, trunk liners, headliners, seating, package trays and door panels. Stratview estimates that an average vehicle incorporates around 25–30 square metres of nonwoven material in carpet applications. Insulation is forecast to be the fastest-growing application as manufacturers seek better acoustic and thermal management.

Needlefelt is expected to retain its position as the dominant manufacturing technology, while polyester remains the leading fibre category because of its durability, dimensional stability, acoustic properties and recyclability.

EVs change material requirements

Electrification creates a different interior-acoustics challenge. Without conventional engine noise, tyre, road and drivetrain sounds become more noticeable, increasing demand for lightweight sound-absorbing materials. Nonwovens can also support thermal management, filtration and weight reduction.

EDANA highlights a parallel circularity shift from difficult-to-recycle polyurethane foam towards polyester nonwovens in selected interior components. Developments in dry-powder impregnation are also intended to reduce solvents and enable more recyclable composite structures.

Growth comes despite a mature car market

Europe’s underlying vehicle-production environment remains challenging. EU passenger-car output fell to 11.5 million units in 2024, while commercial-vehicle production declined by nearly 10%. This means nonwoven suppliers may need to generate growth through higher material content and value per vehicle rather than relying on rapid increases in vehicle production.

For technical-textile manufacturers, the strongest opportunities lie in recycled-polyester systems, acoustic insulation, lightweight mouldable structures and mono-material interior components. The key competitive metrics will increasingly be grams saved per vehicle, acoustic performance, recycled content, processability and end-of-life recyclability.

The Stratview forecast should be treated as directional: its rounded $0.8 billion and $1.0 billion endpoints do not themselves mathematically reproduce the stated 3.1% CAGR, suggesting the calculation uses more precise underlying values.
