Aussie clothing imports down 9.3% in the first nine months

In the first eight months of 2023, Australia’s apparel imports stood at US $5.77 billion, declining year-on- year by 9.3 percent. Of this, imports from China, its biggest source were $3.39 billion, down 14.3 percent over the comparable months of 2022 and accounted for 58.8 percent of overall clothing exports.

In the reporting period, imports from Bangladesh were $610 million, falling by a marginal 1 percent over the first nine months of the earlier year and accounting for 10.6 percent of overall imports. However, garments imports from Vietnam reported an increase to total $400 million, up 10.1 percent from a year ago period and accounted for 6.9 percent of overall apparel imports. Between January and September of 2023, retail sales of textiles, clothing and footwear reached $26.78 billion, falling by 3.9 percent over same period of earlier year.
