Australian consumers have changed the pattern of home textiles imports

As Covid-19 fear subsided Australian home textiles consumers changed that import pattern of home textiles products reducing the import of made-ups and floor products while increasing the import of bedroom, camping, kitchen, and bathroom products.

Australia imported home textiles (HT)worth $2.381 billion in 2022. The share of bedwear imports increased to $613.499 million which was 25.76 percent of the total home textiles imports. In 2020 the total home textiles imports clocked $3.105 billion, while the bedwear imports totaled $492.118 million or only 15.85 percent of the total imports.

Camping products import increased to $222.265 million in 2022, which accounted for 9.33 percent of total home textiles imported that year. In 2020 camping product imports were $136.551 million accounting for only 4.40 percent of total HT imports. The consumers after remaining confined to their homes during covid-19 increased their outdoor activities in 2022. The share of imported kitchen products also jumped 8.4 percent in 2022 from 4.72 percent in 2020. In value terms, the imports increased from $146.59 in 2020 to $196.902 million in 2022.

Made-ups and floor products imports despite a decrease in 2022, still maintained their position in the total HT imports that year—the top five imported home textiles due to their large import size. Australia imported made-ups worth $690.543 million which was equivalent to 29 percent of the total in 2022. But imports were far less than imports of $1,648 million achieved in 2020. These imports accounted for 53.07 percent of the total HT imports that year. Flooring imports accounted for 10.38 percent of the total and were $247.264 million in 2022. The share of flooring products was 12 percent in 2020 and the value of imports was $372.791 million.
