Brazil set to conclude 2024–25 cotton season with record 2.82 million tons in exports

Brazil is on track to finish the 2024–25 cotton season with a record-breaking 2.82 million metric tons in exports—surpassing the previous high of 2.68 million tons by approximately 5%. These figures come from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (SECEX) and CEPEA data, covering shipments from August 2024 through the end of July 2025.

A diversified global buyer base contributed to this robust performance. The year’s top markets included Vietnam (19%), Pakistan (18%), China (16%), Bangladesh (15%), Türkiye (12%), Indonesia (6%), and India (5%). From January to late July 2025, Brazil exported roughly 1.61 million tons, marking a 2.92% increase year-on-year. Notably, in just the first 19 days of July, exports hit 111,700 tons—a drop of 15.9% from June, yet still the second-highest July total on record after July 2024’s 167,200 tons.

Despite the export surge, domestic cotton prices slid to their lowest levels since December 2024, pressured by abundant harvests, surplus supply, softer demand, and global price weakness. The CEPEA/ESALQ eight-day payment index declined 1.69% between July 28 and August 4, closing at BRL 4.0254 per pound (~USD 0.74), while the July monthly average of BRL 4.1061 (~USD 0.76) represented a 4.03% dip from June and a 2% decrease year-on-year—the lowest since November 2024
