Call for incentives for green textile imports by US Custom

Representing more than 1,000 world-famous name brands, we are the trusted public policy and political voice of the apparel and footwear industry, its management and shareholders, its more than three million U.S. workers, and its contribution of $470 billion in annual U.S. retail sales. This association calls for new incentives to promote environmentally-friendly textile imports into the US.

This program addresses the industry’s movement around supply chain mapping, and ESG goals. Achieving transparency and sustainability throughout the supply chain is essential to foster responsible policies and practices. With brand reputation, environmental repercussions, labor discord, and more at stake – mapping and prioritizing the supply chain is essential to prove commitments to the consumer and prevail in meeting internal values and targets.

Beth Hughes, vice president, of trade and customs policy at AAFA, called for new ‘green’ HTS (harmonized tariff schedule) codes – which determine the duty paid on imports into the US – to encourage more sustainable fashion and textile imports.

She made the call as part of the AAFA’s comments on green trade to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) which has invited suggestions on how trade regulations could be used to encourage sustainability and circularity.
