OEKO-TEX® will change its procedures and requirements regarding the certification of organic cotton.
To strengthen oversight and maintain the highest standards, the mention of “organic” or “GMO not detectable” will no longer be possible within the scope of OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certificates for cotton materials. This change strengthens the integrity of the OEKO-TEX® ORGANIC COTTON certification and ensures that only genuinely trustworthy organic cotton is labelled as such.
This change is being implemented to enhance their oversight of certified organic cotton, an area where fraud is prevalent. Their aim is to certify only genuinely trustworthy organic cotton as such.
OEKO-TEX® ORGANIC COTTON requires the whole supply chain, from fibre to ready-made article, to be certified. To avoid supply chain disruptions for OEKO-TEX® ORGANIC COTTON, we have decided to start with the supply chain actors at the beginning of the supply chain.
Existing and valid OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certificates will retain their maximum one-year validity period. Therefore, the change to OEKO-TEX® ORGANIC COTTON certification will be due at the latest after the currently valid OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certificate expires. From October 1st, 2024, however, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certifications with “organic” or “GMO not detectable” will no longer be issued or renewed, starting with GINNERS and SPINNERS and being extended to ALL OTHER players along the supply chain from April 1st, 2025.
