Experts advise to promote sustainable buying

Experts have advised apparel buyers to go for environmentally friendly products and use their dresses for a longer period as the United Nations Environment Programme, states people are buying 60 percent more clothes than they did 15 years ago.

Another finding was that these clothes were being kept only half as long as they used to be. In fact both the UNEP and BBC disclose, a big part of why we have changed our clothing shopping habits is because of the rise of fast fashion — the accessibility of being able to buy cheap, on-trend clothes that we plan to wear a few times and don’t expect to actually last.

The consumption of so much clothes comes at a cost. Not only do a lot of the clothes (which many times contain synthetic materials) that are discarded to end up in landfills. Moreover the process of making it is also terrible for the environment as well. Beside water wastage and emission that come during production to transport, the workers who make the clothes that are often being exploited and work under less than ideal circumstances.

However, there is also a growing number of people on social media sites not only pointing out why we need to stop overbuying clothes that we don’t plan to keep for long, but also demonstrating how they do sustainable shopping. The message has impacted consumer buying but the fashion apparel production continues to grow.

Buying well-made and timeless pieces that consumers know will last you a very, very long time. Or even buying from brands that are sustainable. But most consumers are shopping at fast fashion brands and lower cost stores.Buying a lot less clothes that consumers don’t need is appreciable, or buying stuff that is better made that consumer plan to keep longer.
