Fashion and apparel lead in Indian e-commerce trade

Fashion and apparel continued to lead in terms of order volumes in e-commerce sales in India as its e-commerce industry posted a yearly growth of 36.8 percent in 2022. This was revealed in a report released by ecommerce enabler Unicommerce.

The report points out that the consumer’s visits to physical stores also increased after fears of Covid-19 subsided. The fastest growing categories in ecommerce included beauty and personal care, accessories and eye wear, segments that posted yearly growth of 76.6 percent and 55 percent respectively on volumetric basis.

The interesting development in India’s ecommerce trade it that the growth in Tier one markets like Mumbai, Chennai or Delhi was restricted to 10.3 percent in 2022. But the growth was highest in Tier 3 markets like Rohtak, Udaipur and Roorkee, Rohtak that clocked a growth of 64.7 percent. The Tier 2 markets posted a growth of 51 percent in ecommerce trade in 2022.

Unicommerce’s data is based on analysis of more than 500 million transactions. This does not include the sales of mobile phones and smartphones. The report points out the seamless access to scores of products at attractive rates is driving the growth of ecommerce in India.

The eyewear segment attracted more customers during 2022. They ordered online products like sunglasses, lenses, and transparent eyeglasses.
