Finland’s textile recycling center providing new life to old garments

Textile waste is a problem for the environment. Finland throws out about 100 million kilograms of textile waste every year, and the material has remained a poorly-recycled resource. Finland’s newly opened textile recycling facility is a joint effort between Rester and wastes firm LSJH. The facility is the first in the Nordics to turn waste textile materials into recycled fibers on a large scale.

Finland has created significant expertise in textile recycling as well as a vast network of cooperation. They will help find sustainable textile solutions in line with the recycling and circular economy goals of Finland and the EU. However, sorting technologies must also be developed to ensure sufficient volume and quality of material for industrial recycling processes.

The Nordic countries’ first industrial end-of-textile refinement plant is now open in Paimio in 2021. The 3,000-square-metre plant has been developed by Rester Oy, which recycles companies’ end-of-life textiles and industrial waste materials. LSJH, which processes households’ end-of-life textiles on its production line. Rester Oy and LSJH will drive the textile sector towards a circular economy and begin processing textile waste as an industrial raw material.

Lounais-Suomen Jatehuolto (LSJH) helps residents with their everyday waste issues. We guide people in living more sustainably and organize waste reception services for households and public services. The company utilizes up to 98 % of the received waste as material and energy, thus, promotes sustainability.
