Nudie Jeans releases its 2022 sustainability report

In its yearly sustainability report, Nudie Jeans Company gives details about how it works with materials, production, and products as well as Nudie Jeans as a workplace and the challenges ahead. Its sustainability report for 2022 reflects the impact company creates through its production activities.

The share of sustainable materials increased over the years, and since 2012 all Nudie Jeans denim is made with 100 percent organic cotton. In contrast to organic cotton, conventional cotton accounts for 25 percent of the global use of artificial pesticides but covers only 3 percent of the farmland.

The sustainability parameters set by the company are observed at its Head Office in Gothenburg’s retail stores and subsidiaries but also include the suppliers in Italy, Portugal, Tunisia, Türkiye, Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, and India.

The report says “The denim industry has a high impact on local communities and the environment, and we work the best we can to minimize the negative effects and contribute with positive impacts where possible, in a social, economic, and environmental manner. We hope that sharing and being transparent about our work will inspire others to take responsibility for their full product where the impacts occur. We have mapped our value chain and identified where our biggest impacts lie and which topics we need to report on. We start with the GRI standards and Sustainable Development”

The company reached a new level of product transparency — showing all supply chain tiers, including CO2 emission and water use. It created the first draft of its Climate Action Roadmap that will lead to a way forward to reach the climate targets set in line with Science Based Targets and the Paris Agreement’s 1,5° degree pathway.

In 2022, the company increased its capacity for Repairs and Reuse, by partnering up with the Scottish textile circularity expert ACS Clothing. The company is placed in the Leading category in the Textile Exchange Material Change Index for the fourth year in a row.

Of all fibers it used in 2022, 95,6 percent were fiber defined as sustainable according to the Nudie Jeans Sustainable Material Tool.

While the external circumstances from the aftermath of COVID-19, the war against Ukraine, inflation increases, and rising energy costs have created a less predictable world to navigate, the company remained focused on its sustainable goals. The strategy is focused on amplifying sustainability and incorporating it deeper into our core practices.

A series of high-impact decisions established the direction for the operational work in the second half of 2022, a central part of which was increasing our repair and reuse business. In reworking company strategy, Nudie Jeans are now exploring different activities to align its operational work with the renewed direction.

More than 65,000 pairs of Nudie jeans were repaired globally in the last year. Another milestone was the implementation of stores’ omnichannel solutions. In addition to being an excellent service for customers, this entails a further positive impact on climate reduction targets. For the fourth year, the company mapped its water use and CO2 emissions for Scope 1, 2, and 3, and to cover its total emissions, it invested in carbon offsetting.

By keeping its practical approach to sustainability, the company will take further steps to maintain Nudie Jeans leading position in the denim industry.
