Pakistan’s collapsing cotton industry calls out for help as last try for survival

Pakistan’s Cotton has been facing tough times and downfall ever since the launch of the Cotton Vision 2015 which was initiated in by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Government in 2011 with the vision that production of cotton will go from 10.

6 million bales to 20 million bales in 2015 – or even earlier.

This vision certainly didn’t go as the party had hoped and planned and no one but the poor government policies are to blame.

The fact that in 2015, the production of cotton only scored 10 million bales is evidence enough that the cotton sector is close to taking its last breath and the culprit are these policy makers that paint false day dreams for the government to get the policies approved.

The fall in cotton harvest is both because of a decline in the area of cultivation as well as drop in the yield, the details of which have been given in the SBP report.

Textile sector is the one most affected by this ordeal as the export growth has significantly slowed down with no future growth indicators due to current cotton conditions.

Operational inefficiencies and the lack of focus on the policies are to blame for the suffrage of the cotton sector. Moreover, the enlargement of the sugarcane crops is also an added factor in the demise of cotton.

Moreover, whatever the reasons are, the outcome is the economic damage that the textile sector has been facing due to the poor and low production of cotton.

“But as we speak, perhaps the three main impediments to growth in textile exports are political instability, political instability and political instability,” Dr Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, A leading textile exporter and Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s former vice president commented.
