Recycling industries have set an ambitious goal of processing clothing waste

With support from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, leading players in the Danish textiles and recycling industry have set an ambitious goal of processing clothing waste into high-quality raw materials suitable for the production of new clothes.

MASCOT is leading the seven prestigious Danish brands to achieve this aim in collaboration with the Danish Technological Institute. The collaboration in the green transition of the clothing industry aims to adopt new methods in clothing design to transform used clothing into fibers for new textile products.

The green transition of the clothing industry requires new approaches to clothing design and to processes that will transform clothing waste into usable fibres for new textile products.

The purpose of this collaboration is to improve the quality of recycled textile materials to be used within the existing value chain. The Danish Environmental Agency’s Development and Demonstration Programme (MUDP) is supporting this Circular Textile Industry project.

According to Project Manager Julie Brender Trads from the Danish Technological Institute, recycling used clothes is similar to recycling plastics. As in plastics, the actual material is separated by removing colors and other impregnating agents without damaging the plastic. He said a similar process is adopted in the recycling of used clothes.

He continued that the recycling of used clothing requires collaboration at a mass scale. No single organization could achieve it alone as there are numerous processes that are interconnected and all must work in cohesion. He said the textile industry would have to come together to make the green agenda a reality.
