Sedo Engineering highlighted smart and sustainable way to dye denim

Swiss innovation specialist Sedo Engineering has developed a new dyeing process to help denim brands produce a more sustainable product and meet the demands of a market that’s increasingly environmentally conscious.

Smart-Indigo is a technology that uses only electricity and caustic soda instead of toxic chemicals to dissolve indigo dyes. By giving out only oxygen instead of toxic wastewater, the process is said to reduce water use by 70%, energy consumption by six times, and carbon emissions by 10 times, said the company.

“We’ve combined economy and ecology in one ground-breaking innovation,” said Werner Volkaert, MD of Sedo Engineering. “Denim brands and textile factories can move towards this sustainable production structure easily and with more benefits at a lower cost. It is a win-win solution for our clients, their employees, and consumers.”

Using electricity instead of toxic chemicals to dissolve indigo dyes can not only make a big environmental and economic leap but is also claimed to reduce water consumption by 70% – for example, by eliminating the need to dilute wastewater.

Sedo Engineering said that more than 20 Smart-Indigo machines have already been installed at leading denim producers and some of these have already ordered the second or third machines, seeing the success of their new installation.

Smart-Indigo technology is a blueSign® approved system and is ZDHC level 3 certified. The company presented its fully integrated automation concept at ITMA 2023 and received a tremendous response from visitors.
