Sustainability & functional fabrics in the spotlight as Shanghai show returns

The Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics exhibition will be held on March 28-30 at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre (Shanghai) and will showcase greener products as it has become a trend, particularly among the young Chinese generation. With the COVID scare gone, the show is expected to aim to attract international buyers. It will also enable foreign suppliers to tap into the fast-expanding Chinese market. The exhibition is organized by Messe Frankfurt, with Chinese partners – CCPIT and the China Textile Information Centre.

Wilmet Shea, deputy general manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, said: The desire to adopt healthier, more active lifestyles, is not restricted to Western buyers and is dear to China’s younger generations as well. Moreover, China’s activewear market is also experiencing rapid growth. The market is flooded with athleisure to capture this new business potential. Most luxury fashion brands are now offering products that the young Chinese like.

The organizers have dedicated several zones exclusively to sustainability. The Chinese exporters are also making all-out efforts to comply with the new sustainable laws enacted by the European Union. The wet processing of textiles would particularly be impacted by the change. This includes not only bleaching, and dyeing, but property-specific finishing, such as water repellency. The challenge would be to replace harmful or environmental polluting with more sustainable production.

The participating companies and suppliers are tailoring their product ranges in line with the circular economy concept of the EU. Visitors at this year’s Intertextile Apparel, see fashionable denim products with sustainability solutions at Beyond Denim.

The dedicated zone named All About Sustainability will also have stalls of other exhibitors, most of whom have participated in the exhibition in the pre-covid-19 era. Among those that would be returning this year include the Oeko-Tex 100 certified Shanghai Tiqiao Textile Yarn Dyeing, which is an innovative dyeing, knitting, and finishing fabric mill, and the reputable quality control and compliance organization QIMA.
