The European Union (EU) has awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status to ‘Söke Pamugu,’ a cotton variety cultivated in the Söke district of Aydın province, Turkey.
This marks the first time a Turkish cotton variety has received such recognition from the EU.
The PGI status acknowledges Söke Pamugu’s unique qualities, which are closely tied to the region’s specific environmental conditions and traditional farming practices.
Söke Pamugu is renowned for its lustrous appearance and long fibers, producing fine and durable yarn. The cotton’s exceptional quality is attributed to the soil structure and microclimate of the Söke district, rather than its genetic composition. The PGI certification aims to enhance the economic value of this product for local producers by protecting its unique identity and promoting its distinct characteristics in the market.
The EU’s recognition of Söke Pamugu underscores its commitment to celebrating agricultural diversity and protecting traditional products. Thomas Ossowski, head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, emphasized that the PGI logo will provide Söke Pamugu producers with improved market opportunities and increased economic strength. This development is expected to bolster the region’s agricultural sector and contribute to the preservation of its cultural heritage.
The PGI status not only protects Söke Pamugu’s unique qualities but also elevates its profile in international markets, paving the way for broader recognition and export opportunities.
