US announces additional 50% tariffs on China, increasing total to 104%

The US government has implemented a significant increase in tariffs on Chinese imports, raising the total tariff to 104%. This new tariff structure, effective as of April 9, 2025, follows a series of escalations in the ongoing trade dispute between the two nations. President Donald Trump approved the move after China refused to roll back retaliatory tariffs imposed on US goods.

Previously, the US imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, but the tariffs have gradually risen, with the latest 50% hike marking one of the most aggressive trade actions in recent memory. This move follows a 20% increase in March and another 34% imposed last week. According to President Trump, these tariffs are aimed at addressing the economic imbalance, with the US accusing China of economic unfairness.

In response, China has condemned the escalation, labeling it as an example of the US’s “blackmailing nature.” The Chinese government has stated that if the US continues down this path, China will stand firm and continue to retaliate. The US, however, remains hopeful that China will eventually reach out to negotiate a resolution to the ongoing trade tensions.

The new tariffs are likely to have a significant impact on global trade, particularly in sectors reliant on Chinese manufacturing.
