The United Kingdom is Turkey’s second-largest trading partner after Germany.
As the UK and the European Union prepare to sign the free trade agreement (FTA), things have also been moving along for Turkey and the UK as the former has eagerly welcomed the deal in final stages of debate that depends on the future of the post-Brexit relationship between the Eu and the UK, says the Turkish Foreign Ministry in a written statement.
“Turkey, having close relations with the U.
K. in all fields, is also an EU candidate country and in the customs union with the EU. We believe that this deal will provide Turkey with new opportunities in terms of its relations both with the EU and the U.K. In this context, the preparations for the signing of a free trade agreement between the U.K. and Turkey have also reached its final stage,” the statement revealed.
After 10 months of ardent debate and discussion, the UK and EU have finally reached the stage of conclusion and have signed a free trade deal which was officially announced on Thursday. Britain has already separated with the EU in January after a divisive referendum in 2016. However, as soon as the previous Brexit agreement expires as the new year starts, the new FTA will be put into action.
Coming back to the Turkey – UK deal, Turkey intents is to institute an FTA with the UK but that can only happen when EU – UK officially part ways as Turkey is a member of the EU Customs Union.
