Bangladesh to import scrapped clothes for recycled apparel items to cater to global demand

The world’s No. 2 exporter of readymade garment (RMG) products, Bangladesh will now import scrapped clothes to make recycled apparel items from them to cater to their rising demand globally.

As many as 266 scrap clothes, buyers & importers are involved in importing scrapped clothes to Bangladesh worldwide. However, the latest demand from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

It may be noted that circular and sustainable fashion is fast replacing the shelves to curtail greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions the world over and protect the world from climate change effects. Leading brands, manufacturers, and retailers are investing heavily in the field in response to repeated calls from environment-related organizations and forums, including the United Nations.

A good number of local Bangladeshi brands like ‘sailor’, ‘yellow’, ‘Aarong’, and others in the last decades, are undertaking sustainable initiatives. For example, ‘sailor’ and ‘Aarong’ are introducing natural cotton examples: organic cotton, Bamboo fiber, and Jute fiber products.

Meanwhile, some 30 multinational brands, supplier factories, and other key stakeholders are working on eco-friendly productions.

“We export jhoot (scrapped) clothes but the time has come to import them to make garments from them in order to save the environment,” said Faruque Hassan, president of the BGMEA, while addressing a press conference on the recently concluded Made in Bangladesh Week 2022 at a local in Dhaka.
