Brands committed to ensure garment worker’s safety in Pakistan

The steering committee of the International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry globally comprising leading brands has confirmed their commitment to a new programme in Pakistan.

A statement released by Otto Group, PVH Corp (owners Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein), H&M, C&A, Inditex (owner of Zara), and Bestseller, media release stated that all brands arond the world would sign the Pakistan Accord agreement.

Formed in 2021 the International Accord, originally to hold brands accountable in Bangladesh for workplace safety has confirmed plans to expand it to Pakistan in December. The accord has the blessings of two global trade unions and 189 global fashion companies

Commitment to the workplace safety programme would be carried out in close collaboration with Pakistani suppliers of brands and other stakeholders. A Pakistan Accord office is being established for the commencement of programme, and continued engagement with Pakistani stakeholders, according to the statement of the steering committee.

It reaffirms that besides members of the steering committee, all brands that are members of the Accord would support Pakistani suppliers in meeting the highest safety standards. Efforts are on to establish local governance structures to ensure that all decisions regarding safety measures are taken in collaboration with industry and union participation.

The purpose of the International Accord is to protect the health and safety of millions of workers. It would also assist the industry in achieving sustainable growth in exports. The program is a proof of 189 brands for a long-term sourcing relationship with Pakistan, the statement adds.

This Accord would also highlight the efforts of Pakistani suppliers that they are making for the safety and welfare of the garment workers in Pakistan. The Pakistan Accord includes all key features of workers’ safety. It would have an independent complaints mechanism, independent safety inspections would be conducted to address fire, electrical, structural and boiler hazards; safety committee training, and a worker safety awareness programme. The 189 brands that are signatories in the Accord collectively import garments and textiles worth $2.6 billion annually from Pakistan.
