High-tech apparel training campus inaugurated in Sri Lanka

A new high-tech campus of the Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel (SLITA) was inaugurated in Rathmalana last week, which will provide skilling and training in garmenting industry.

Industries Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr Ramesh Pathirana inaugurated the new campus, which he called a significant step forward, for building knowledge in the crucial sector.

“SLITA is a government institute which provided training courses specifically tailored for the garment industry,” media reports stated.

Apart from training, SLITA also offers consultancy, testing and technical services to the apparel industry. The institute also has plans to offer a full fledged degree course by the end of the year.

The new three-storey institute has 12 fully equipped classrooms, five interactive classrooms, an advanced testing laboratory, and also latest garment stitching and related machinery.

“The inauguration of this new institute reaffirms our commitment to nurturing growth and innovation within the apparel industry,” Dr Pathirana said.

Clothing is the island country’s biggest industrial export sector and earned US $5.95 billion in 2022, which helped the country weather its worst financial crisis since its independence in 1948.
