Indonesian textile sector urged to focus on functional textiles

At a recent event, panelists said that Indonesia should focus on the production of functional textiles as well as circular textiles to ensure the holistic development of the textile industry.

Around 150 attendees from the industry value chain gathered at the FOKUS BBT 2023 event held recently which discussed global trends, challenges, and opportunities for the industry. Head of the Industrial Services Standardisation and Policy Agency (BSKJI), Andi Rizaldi said the industry should focus on producing raw materials as well as finished textiles used in very specific needs like roads, infrastructure, architecture, automotive, etc.

Rizaldi added that based on the ‘Making Indonesia 4.0’ roadmap, the industry will make Indonesia one of the world’s leading producers of functional textiles. One of the goals of the roadmap is to develop and produce import substitute products of raw materials and auxiliaries,” he added.

While speaking on circularity in textiles, Andi stated that the implementation of a sustainable business model is a statutory mandate, referring to the policy of implementing green industry initiatives. He added that the greening of the industry is being followed through the publication of ‘Green Industry Standards for the Industry.

“We appreciate and continue to support the stakeholders in the industry who have initiated the implementation of this program, he noted.

Additionally, the Ministry of Industry is also drafting a regulation regarding the mandator implementation of technical specifications (ST) for apparel. The ST refers to the four parameters in SNI 8101:201 which include thread slip resistance, knitted sewing strength, pH value, and flame-resistant properties.
