Indonesian VSF producers told to control harmful gas emissions

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry has dwelled on the importance of controlling harmful gas emissions; especially SOx (sulfur) content, in the production of viscose staple fibre (VSF).

This requires the VSF producers to install air quality monitoring equipment and in a circular, the Ministry underlined the importance of controlling dangerous gas emissions by these manufacturers.

“In order to control and limit harmful emissions, these VSF manufacturers should install Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) to monitor their exhaust emissions,” a Ministry statement stated.



The statement added that Ministry officials visited the plants of PT South Pacific Rayon and PT Indo Bharat Rayon, who are major producers of viscose fibre.



The circular added that it was found that both companies have installed a Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) as well as an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP), which is a pollution control equipment in their plants.

The results of field inspections show that the two companies have succeeded in meeting environmental quality standards well going by results of emission tests using the Adaptive Monitoring System (AiMS).

The Ministry has also released a draft on ‘Regulation of Green Industry Standards’ for the viscose staple fibre producers.



This draft regulation will apply to all Indonesian viscose or rayon producers and ensure that they meet the environmental standards in order to reduce impact of the industry on the environment.
