Six Indonesian textile factories terminate 5,000 workers

Six textile factories in Indonesia have recently terminated the employment of around 5,000 workers amid an onslaught of illegally imported textiles and garments and a decline in exports.

This was conveyed by Ristadi, the President of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPN) Ristadi.

According to Ristadi, the main reasons for the layoffs ranged from textile and apparel factories not being able to survive against illegal imports and a fall in exports.

“These lay-off figures of August and September are the latest among the thousands of workers whose employment has been terminated in the textile and garment industry in the current year,” Ristadi said.

Quoting figures from the Ministry of Industry, Ristadi said that throughout 2022 and 2023, there would be 345,000 layoffs of workers in the textile industry.

He blamed illegal imports of cheap textiles and clothing to be the main reason for the bad condition of the industry and urged the government to stop such illegal imports.
