Textile Exchange releases Regenerative Agriculture Landscape Analysis

Textile Exchange’s Regenerative Agriculture Landscape Analysis intends to provide the apparel, textile, and footwear industry with a clearer understanding of tools, programs, initiatives, guidance, and best practices within the regenerative agriculture landscape and offers concrete pathways for brands to deepen their engagement. The full report can be found here.

This project is intended to complement the technical guidance on target-setting currently being developed by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Carbon Removals and Land Sector Initiative, the Science-Based Targets initiative Forest, Land, and Agriculture project, and Net Zero workstreams, the Science-Based Targets for Nature, and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Case studies include companies such as J. Crew, Madewell, VF Corp., Oshadi (a regenerative fashion collective in India), and US-based traceable wool supplier Shaniko Wool Company. This report is based on 25 in-depth stakeholder interviews with guidance from expert reviewers. Funding for the report was provided by Dry, J. Crew Group (including Madewell), existing funding platforms from Cotton Connect and Textile Exchange.

Notably, the report addresses two critical issues:

“recognize the Indigenous roots of regenerative agriculture, to include racial and social justice as essential components of any so-called ‘regenerative,’” system, and to “specifically address financial and financial risks.

“active decision-making role” (including financial models) in any regenerative agriculture project from the outset, or they cannot be considered a project.”
