Rothy’s introduced its shoes in 2016 and is based in San Francisco. It is known for its eco-friendly, fashionable, ballet flats worn by celebrities such as Meghan Markle. The brand says it makes its shoes from single-use plastic bottles in a 300,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan, China.
Under its new recycling program, Rothy’s accepts customers’ old shoes to melt the plastic in them once more to create a new pair. They call this material a twice-recycled thread.
The multicolored ballet flats of the firm carry a cult following while most of the customers seldom know that each pair had two previous lives.
Through this innovation, the show maker firm has aimed at contributing to the global efforts of bringing down the share of the fashion industry into climate change, responsible for 10% of global carbon-dioxide output every year.
Extensive research and development besides heavy financing has been involved in the recreation of the pair under the new circular program. However, the opportunity of moving towards a circular future has been the driving force since the company entered the business model.
