Vietnamese garment factories offering joining bonuses to workers

With garment export orders picking up from October, apparel factories in Binh Duong province of Vietnam are frantically looking for skilled workers and even offering joining bonuses to these workers.

Clothing export orders had declined drastically since the beginning of the year and so Vietnamese garment factories had laid off workers who had then returned to their villages.

According to the Department of Labour of Binh Duong province, several garment factories are recruiting workers in the hundreds and there is a need for thousands of workers in the province.

A newly opened garment plant in Tan Dong Hiep Industrial Park needs up to 1,000 workers and so is giving a bonus of VND 3 million to each worker, a monthly wage of VND 12-15 million, and also a production bonus of VND 5 million per month.

Pham Thi Xuan Trang, Chairwoman of the Textile and Apparel Association of Binh Duong province said that there is a huge shortage of labour in textile and garment enterprises.

Trang explained that in the past, workers could work overtime and earn an income of VND 13-14 million per month.

However, in the first half of 2023, when export orders started to contract, workers could not find enough work and so their income was reduced to VND 7-8 million per month, which made it impossible for them to survive and so they returned to their villages.
