300 textile plants impacted by new EU regulations

The new EU directive to the industries to impose environmental safeguards measures in their production processes by 2027 gives four years’ time to them and would also impact around 300 textile industry plants in the European Union (EU).

These 300 textile plants are required to comply with the law adopted under the EU Industrial Emissions Directive to reduce their environmental impact. Besides the textile plants this directive would also impact 3000 plants operational in the EU countries in order to reduce air, water, and soil pollution to levels that do not hurt human health.

As far as the textile sector is concerned the changes concern wet processing. This includes, bleaching, finishing or dyeing the textile, such as water repellency. The EU narrative is a continuation of the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles. A new plant would be required to comply with new requirements forthwith but the existing plants have been given four years to comply with the requirements of new environmental directives.

The changes required by EU law concern emissions into the air and water. It particularly targets 20 air and water pollutants like formaldehyde, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), and dust. The law also required removing ammonia for emissions to air, and metals for emissions to water. The principles of focus on the circular economy are also part of the new EU compliance. The European Commission says the changes are the result of a coordinated effort by stakeholders.
