Ellen Macarthur Foundation releases its 2021-2023 Jeans Redesign progress

More than 1.5 million pairs of “redesigned” jeans were brought to market in 2023 alone, according to a report released by UK circular economy charity Ellen Macarthur Foundation (EMF) This figure represents a three-fold increase in the volume reported for 2021.

The EMF published its Jeans Redesign progress its 2021-23 insights report for the Jeans Redesign project. The project was initiated in 2019 to bring jeans producers towards eco-responsible apparel manufacturing.

The participants in the redesign project have increased to 100 that are certified by the charity as responsible producers. The report reveals the details as to how 72 percent of value chain partners were able to make Redesign-approved denim fabrics and jeanswear over the period.

EMF report revealed that its partners had already managed to take the amount of post-consumer recycled content used in blends to 87percent but there was little progress on limiting the proportion of non-cellulosic fibres to just 2 percent, terming it as a major technical challenge. This is especially the case when it comes to making stretch denim with appropriate durability.

An EMF official said the organization now aims to step up the pace and scale of progress in fashion apparel production.
